The much-anticipated draws for the 2025 Delta Football Association (DFA)/FLEXIP Federation Cup have been concluded, with defending champions Warri Wolves FC earning a bye into the quarterfinal stage. The draw ceremony was held at the Patrick Okpomo Football House, Asaba, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.
In the opening fixture, Young Soccer Academy FC of Issele-Uku will face Morak FC of Warri at the Oleh Township Stadium.
DFA Chairman Commends Governor, Calls for Discipline
The Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Chief Godwin Adode, expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support of grassroots football development.
“This year’s tournament is another great opportunity for our players to showcase their talents to the international community. The DFA will work with various media houses to highlight the immense football talent that abounds in Delta State,” Adode said.
He urged all participating teams and players to exhibit sportsmanship, discipline, and integrity throughout the competition. “Any form of misconduct will not be tolerated and will attract equal punishment,” he warned.
Adode also praised FLEXIP for partnering with the DFA to organize the tournament. “This partnership is a step forward in our mission to elevate Delta State football to greater heights,” he added.
Competition Insights and Challenges
DFA Vice Chairman and Head of Competitions, Mr. Neville Ambekederemo, reiterated the importance of adhering to tournament rules and emphasized the neutrality of match officials.
“Match officials have been tasked with maintaining fairness and firmness. All clubs must strictly follow the competition guidelines,” he stated.
Ambekederemo attributed the lower-than-expected turnout of clubs to the high registration fees set by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which many clubs in the state found unaffordable. Despite this challenge, 15 clubs registered for the male category, while two female teams—Delta Queens FC of Asaba and Delta Babes FC of Warri—automatically qualified for the final.
“Matches will be played at two venues, Oleh and Sapele, with the finals scheduled for Asaba,” Ambekederemo confirmed.
