Some concerned residents have called for the clearing of blocked canals in Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas.
They made the call in a media chat with our correspondent during the Delta State monthly environmental exercise held on Saturday June 24,2023
The respondents reasoned that opening up of the blocked canals would go a long way in solving the perennial flood problem facing both local governments areas.
A renowned public analyst Chief Akpojotor Adjarho attributed the cause of flooding in most areas in Warri South Local Government Area to the bocked canals and drainages .
Similarly a resident of Aka Avenue in Uvwie , Onoriose Oniovosa who spoke in the same vein commended former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for the ongoing massive drainage projects in Uvwie Local Government Area .
He however frowned at the blocked canals and drainages in the local government area.
” It is one thing to construct new canals and drainages, is another thing to clear them regularly in order to serve the purpose for which they are constructed” .he added
Meanwhile all the old canals and drainages that were seen by our correspondent in the two local government areas were overfilled with overgrown weeds and refuse at as the time of filing this report .
They included the one in 7 UP by Effurun / Sapele Road in Uvwie Local Government Area.
In Warri South Local Government Area , the canal along Lower Erejuwa Road ( near Warri Garage and Lower Bridge areas ), Warri / Sapele Road by Wema Bank , South End of Otovwodo (Agbassa)
Community , Bowen Avenue Brigde , Ogboru Road , South End of Igbudu Market were in their extreme worst state.
Meanwhile there was also poor compliance by residents on Delta State directives on the environmental sanitation as there was no restriction of movements
A call was put across to a top official in Ministry of Environment , Delta State for comment.
He denied responsibility of the ministry being in charge of such matters as he said that Warri , Uvwie and Environs Urban Renewal Development Agency was in charge of clearance of blocked and construction of canals in both local government areas.
” Go and meet them. They are working towards it ” The said top official of Ministry of Environment Delta State added.
Efforts to reach the agency which our correspondent was referred to for comment was unsuccessful at as the time of filing this report.
