The Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, has urged the people of Ugborodo communities in Warri South West local Government Area of Delta state to maintain peace and existing mutual understand with Chevron Nigeria Limited
Ugborodo communities had staged a peaceful Protest against Chevron Nigeria Limited over Non -compliance with the Petroleum Industrial Act ,PIA and alleged insensitivity over their plight .
The appeal was made by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory commission during a mediation meeting between Chevron Nigerian limited and representatives of Ugborodo communities in warri .
The management of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory commission , NUPRC to intervene on the matter to restore peace and harmony between the host communities and Chevron Nigeria limited .
The commissions Chief Executive Engr Gbenga Komolafe directed that status quo be immediately maintained by aggrieved parties .
Komolafe said the directive is in line with it’s statutory mandate on the implementation of the HOSTCOM provisions in the PIA to ensure peace and conducive operating environment for the upstream operations .
Mr Komolafe who was represented during the meeting by the head warri office Mr Benjamin Ogunnubi further stated that the commission will again invite the Management of Chevron Nigeria limited and representatives of Ugborodo communities to another meeting to find lasting solution to the issues raised by the Ugborodo communities leaders .
Responding the Ugborodo communities representatives said they will meet with their leaders and brief them on the decision of Nigerian upstream petroleum regulatory commission .
It would be recalled that the Ugborodo people during a peaceful Protest revealed that they lack potable water, electricity Power supple, hospital amongst other social amenities.
They added that their youths are unemployed.
The Igbajoh of Ugborodo ,Prince Terry Atete who spoke on behalf of the Eghare-Aja stressed that the action of the community was a peaceful protest, claiming that the Ugborodo communities had written to Chevron on the PIA concerning the award of contracts and employment.
He accused Chevron of deliberate refusal to comply.
The PIA if implemented diligently, will help facilitate Nigeria’s economic development by attracting and creating investment opportunities for local and international investors.
