Rotary Club of Effurun GRA,
District 9141 has trained fifty female students On how to produce resuable sanitary pads with a call on Authorities of Basic and Secondary Schools in Delta State to provide water and toilets in their schools to enable the girl child disposed used menstrual materials.
The President Rotary club of Effurun GRA ,Rotarian Benjamin Usiora made the appeal at Hussey college warri during Pad the Girl project organized by the club in collaboration with pinefon empowerment initiative
Our Correspondent Reports that Rotary club of Effurun GRA donated Reusable sanitary pads to female students from Hussey college warri, Ugborikoko secondary school and Uwangue college warri that attended the training programme.
Rotarian Benjamin Usiora said the pad a girl project is inline with Rotary international theme for January titled Vocational service ,adding that the initiative is to assist indigent students have reusable pads and know more about menstrual hygiene.
He added that Research have shown that menstrual periods have caused girls to be absent from schools globally.
He further said Rotary club of Effurun GRA wants to ensure that female students do not run away from school due to lack of money to buy mensural pads.
Rotarian Usiora enjoined the students that were trained on making reusable pads to teach others in their various schools and their friends at home .
A representative of pinefon empowerment initiative, Emmanuella Ememu who is a nurse lectured the female students on mensuration, mensural hygiene and period poverty encouraged the students to train their friends after the training programme .
She added that In 2014 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report, 1 out of every 10 menstruating girls misses school during their menstrual cycle due to lack of access to menstrual products and resources.
She said reusable sanitary pads can be used for 2 years and above depending on the user.
Ememu revealed that most girls that abandoned schools because of lack of funds to buy sanity pads are returning to school because of the introduction of resuable sanitary pads which can be easily produced with affordable fabrics.
At the end of the training miss Ijeoma favour of Ugborikoko secondary school,
Elizabeth Eyirhe of Uwangue college warri and Ovie divine a student of
Hussey college warri thanked Rotary club Effurun GRA for the training and lecture as well as the donation of resuable sanitary pads to them .
With excitement the beneficiaries promised to teach their female classmates and friends on how to produce resuable sanitary pads.
The event was climaxed with the presentation of Menstrual Pads and certificates to the students .
