Every January 15 is marked as the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, in Warri south local government area, the council chairman Dr Michael Tidi urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of peace through dialogue and inter-ethnic harmony rather than conflict.
Dr Tidi made the appeal at the grand finale of the 2024 Armed forces Remembrance Day celebration held at warri south secretariat.
Dr Michael Tidi said the armed forces Remembrance day is set aside to celebrate fallen heroes who died in the line of duty, as well as those still in service.
Dr Tidi noted that the soldiers, no doubt exhibited the highest level of patriotism and loyalty to the country by their supreme sacrifice, stressing that Nigerians should use the opportunity of the occasion to show heartfelt appreciation to the veteran soldiers.
The warri South council Boss appealed that the unity of the nation should be placed above all other interest so that the efforts of the veteran soldiers that died in the course of fighting for the unity of Nigeria should not be in vain.
While nothing that the celebration calls for sober reflection and sacrifice by all and sundry, Dr Tidi urged those present at the event to contribute generously towards the Appeal Fund to raise money for the upkeep of the orphans and widows of the departed soldiers as well as the surviving but disabled veterans.
The Chairman of warri South Local Government ,Dr Michael Tidi assured that the funds being raised would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for the well-being of the dependents of the fallen heroes and disable soldiers.
Dr Tidi disclosed that the event was moved from Erejuwa playing ground to the warri South council secretariat following the construction of a courtage hospital by the council which will take care of the primary health needs of the people.
Dr Tidi says the hospital would be inaugurated before the end of his tenure as council chairman
Earlier in his address the chairman Nigerian Legion warri South chapter ,Retired Major Pius Unurhiere thanked the warri South council chairman Dr Tidi for constructing the Statue of the unknown soldier at the cenotaph
inside the secretariat and for supporting the legioners
Retired Major Unurhiere requested that the council should provide an office apartment for them in the secretariat close to the cenotaph
