Residents in Eke avenue street in Jakpa road of Uvwie local government Area in Delta State, have called on the State government to come to their aid, as they lament over the reoccurring experience of flooding in the area.
The incident of flooding however, became worse on Saturday 19th August, 2023 as residents woke up to see some of their properties floating, as it rained almost through out the night, till the early hours of Saturday morning.
A resident in the area, Mr Chike, explained that “this street used to be the envy of many people living around this area as it was well planned and we do not have issues of flooding as our drainage was properly channeled to a canal , at the extreme of the street, until people started filling and building houses, leading to the canal, thereby, obstructing the flow of water” he stated.
Another resident and a shop owner in the street who declined to give her name, lamented how she rarely experience peace whenever it rained.
“I was awake through out the night while it was raining, because I already envisaged what the out come of this rain will bring.See how this flood has lay waste to the items that I bought at a high cost, and hope to sell in my shop! My heart is bleeding as I am already at a lost.
” I am using this opportunity to call on the State government to use his good office to come to our aid by demolishing houses that are built on water ways in this street, as I heard that such exercise is currently taking place in Warri ” she added.
As at the time of filing in this report, residents and shop owners in the street were seen bailing out water from their houses and shops as the area was currently unmotorable.
