As part of Efforts by the Delta State Government to Salvage Deltans from Perennial flood disaster , Delta State Oil Producing Areas and Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment on Monday desilt Canals at Airport road and kosini Areas in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State .
The exercise which was supervised by the DESOPADEC led Board of Olorogun John Nani and Chief Festus Ochonogor as well as the Director of Sanitation and waste management Mrs Francisca Atigan identify structures preventing flow of natural water ways .
Our Correspondent Reports that the desilting of drainages was done simultaneously in Ughelli and Warri .
The Team of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development , DESOPADEC led by the Managing Director , chief Festus Ochonogor were received by the Director of sanitation and Waste ministry of Environment Mrs Francisca Atigan flanked by a former SA to the immediate past Governor , Comrade Kingsley Iweka and others .
Chief Ochonogor who expressed displeasure at the rate in which some residents in the state deliberately built structures on the natural water ways said the Director to the state government on special duties ,chief frank Omare would be informed to bring down such structures to give way for free flow of water to the canal.
At the immigration Estate at Airport road ,the DESOPADEC managing Director also identify a fence blocking the flow of water to Edjeba and Ekurede Urhobo canal,saying that the structure also need to be brought down for easy flow of water thereby preventing most part of Airport road from flooding .
Chief Ochonogor directed the evacuation of wastes from a canal at kosini which was filled up with empty bottle water and other plastics .
The MD of DESOPADEC chief Ochonogor disclosed that the state Governor , Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is desirous to being back the old glory of Warri and it’s environs and the urged residents in the area to support the Governor to achieve his desire by assisting to dispose their wastes at the approved waste dump sites .
He urged residents in warri and environs to get approval from the constituted authorities before building structures , stressing that the structures on the water waters were not approved by government .
The Youth President Okere Urhobo development movement Mr Brume Eyekpimi thanked the team of DESOPADEC and Ministry of Environment for coming to the rescue residents of the area who have been suffering following the recent flood .
He advised residents of Kosini, Edjeba and Ekurwsw Urhobo to desist from dumping waste in the drainages .
At Otovwodo in Ughelli , Ughelli North local government Area , the team were also seen desilting the drainages to allow free flow of water .
The popular Otovwodo junction was wearing a new look after the removal of the wastes from the drainages .
Most of the residents at Otovwodo thanked the Delta State Government for cleaning up their drainages and evacuating the wastes to the dump site .
Areas to be clean up included Uvwie Sapele, Agbarho, Oghara , Jesse , Oleh Ozoro kwale , Umutu Agbor amongst other DESOPADEC mandate areas inorder to curb flooding .
