Local Government elections will hold across Delta State on Saturday July 13,2024
Chairman of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, Doctor Jerry Agbaike told newsmen in Asaba that the commission had made adequate arrangements for the smooth conduct of elections for twenty five chairmanship and five hundred councillorship positions in the state.
He gave an assurance that the local government elections would be free, fair and credible, and that ten political parties fielded candidates in the elections.
Meanwhile, the All Right Foundation, Africa ,says it has deployed seventy five trained observers to monitor the election in twenty five local government areas of Delta State.
At a pre elections news conference in Asaba, the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of the Foundation, Ambassador Jake Epelle said three observers would be at each local government area and polling unit where there are eligible persons with disabilities, to monitor the electoral body’s level of compliance with assisted voting provisions for persons with disabilities.
He said, ” In our continuous commitment to leveraging technology and data-driven approaches for election observation, we have significantly upgraded our election observer app. This innovative tool will empower our observers to transmit information swiftly and efficiently in real time to our election hub. ” he said.
Epelle stated further, “the enhanced data collection and real-time reporting capabilities of this app will play a pivotal role in improving the accuracy and timeliness of our observations, ensuring that every issue encountered is promptly addressed.
He reaffirmed the commitment to promoting a disability-inclusive electoral process where every Nigerian, regardless of ability, can exercise his or her right to vote freely and fairly at all elections.
The Programme Manager of the All Right Foundation Africa, Mr Adeolu Kilanko called on the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, political parties, security agencies and civil society organizations to collaborate closely and ensure the safety of all voters, particularly persons with disabilities due to their vulnerability to intimidation.
