Members of Citizens Rights Concern Enhancement Initiative have called for faster delivery of justice in Nigeria judiciary system.
The Human rights activists made the call on Wednesday at Effurun Uvwie local government area of Delta state during the 2nd Annual Congress Dialogue held in commemoration of the 64th Anniversary of Nigeria, Organised by citizens rights concern enhancement initiative.
The Guest speaker Justice Anthony Akpovi spoke on the theme ” delayed Justice in Nigeria judiciary system what can be done differently?
When the Civil Rights activists on congregated on Wednesday October 2nd at Effurun in Uvwie local government area it was to deliberate on Nigeria’s 64th independence with one thing in mind, delayed Justice in Nigeria judiciary system what can be done differently.
A number of Rights Activists, human rights lawyers and security personnels spoke on the need for speedy dispensation of justice.
After x-raying the Judiciary they were unanimous on the need for autonomy in the Judiciary to speed up justice delivery.
For the stakeholders those in the Temple of justice must discharge their duties with the fear of God, courage and diligence.
Chairman of the board of trustee citizens rights concern enhancement initiative, Ambassador (Comrade) Egedege Edewor stated that the Judiciary is one of the most important organs of government with a duty to uphold the tenets of the rule of law.
He said delayed justice in the Nigerian judiciary has dashed the hope of many common people making some to lose faith in that the judiciary upholds the rule of law.
Chairperson of the event Ambassador Onyi Ikemefuna who spoke via electronic media platform commended the citizens rights concern enhancement initiative for the programme stating that the judiciary should Stop the delay in justice dispensation.
The Guest speaker, Justice Anthony Akpovi observed that some times there are delay in justice delivery in the Nigeria Judicial System but insisted that there is room for improvement.
He listed some of the causes of delay in Justice delivery in Nigeria to include insecurity, delay tactics by lawyers, inadequate number of Judges as well as the inability of correctional centers to bring Defendants to court as at when due.
He also complained that most cases that can be settled out of court find their way to the Temple of justice.
He also complained of poor infrastructure, as well as Intimidation of Judges.
Justice Akpovi proffered some solutions.
He suggested the Appointment of more Judges, protection of witnesses particularly in very high profile cases as well as the building of more court rooms.
Justice Akpovi condemned those who use all kinds of tactics to cause injustice to others.
